This item can appear as any type of high quality, waterproof scroll tube, though wood seems to be the most common material used. Two command words are almost always engraved on the side of the tube. These tubes can hold up to 12 pages of paper inside, keeping them completely dry. If a spell of up to third level is copied onto sheets of loose paper and placed within the tube and sealed with wax from a candle costing no less than 25 gp, the true powers of this scroll are manifested, so long as only a single spell and nothing else is kept in the tube.
As long as the spell papers are kept in the tube and the seal unbroken, the mage who wrote the spell need only touch the scroll tube to his forehead, utter the correct command word, and the caster memorizes the spell inside the tube in 1 round. The caster still needs to rest before memorization, however. In an emergency, the mage can try a “forced memorization” of the spell without rest. If used in this manner, there is a 20% chance per spell level for the “forced memorization” not working. If it doesn’t work, the spell pages are destroyed as if by a disintegration spell, and are triggered on the spot, with the mage as the target. Additionally, the mage suffers splitting headaches for 4d4 turns (save vs. death for half) during which time he cannot cast any spells or memorize any spells. A failed forced memorization also has a 5% chance of destroying the magic item.
In a really dire emergency, the caster can speak the other command word. This then turns the scroll tube into a wand, with the spell inside being the “charge.” If used in this manner treat it as if the caster had cast the spell normally, but with no need for any components, and the pages are consumed by the magic item to fuel the spell. The down side of this is that there is a 20% chance per spell level for the scroll tube to burn out, destroying all of its magical properties.
The pages that are placed within the scroll tube must be prepared as if they were being written into the mages spell book. Only the caster who wrote the spell pages can use the magic item. However, a magical scroll can be put into the scroll tube instead of spell pages. If a scroll is used, it doesn’t matter who wrote the scroll, as long as it is a spell that the caster can cast normally. If the user doesn’t know what spell is written on the scroll he cannot use the magic item to implant the spell within his memory. He will therefore be forced to open the scroll tube to read the scroll within and he will then have to reseal the tube. If a scroll is used only one scroll can be placed within the tube.
There are more powerful versions of this item that are designed for use with higher-level spells, but they are larger, bulkier, and rarer than this low-level version. These larger versions function exactly the same way as a standard scroll tube of remembrance. Their respective sizes and XP points are as follows:
Levels 4-6 | XP 10,000 | Holds up to 24 pages |
Levels 7-9 | XP 20,000 | Holds up to 36 pages |
